Green Hiker Campaign
ABOUT GREEN HIKER CAMPAIGN
Due to their sheer beauty, religious and cultural significance, Nepal’s high altitude wetlands attract millions of tourists every year.
However, because these wetlands are fragile, the pervasion of human presence and activity in the region brings on a set of challenges. In addition to this, the looming threat of climate change has already begun to show its impacts in the region.
The Green Hiker Campaign is WWF’s initiative to encourage tourists and tour operators in the Himalayan region to opt for sustainable and responsible tourism. Covering almost the entire Himalayan region, WWF aims at reducing the baggage of tourism while inviting tourists to enjoy the Himalayas in its pristine form.
Nepal Tourism Board, Government of Nepal, is partner to this campaign.
WHY THIS CAMPAIGN?
To raise awareness about the vulnerability of the Himalayan ecosystem, and encourage tourists and tour operators to adopt disciplines, which will help reduce the footprint (impacts) of tourism, through positive messages.
HOW DOES THE CAMPAIGN WORK?
The Green Hiker Campaign encourages tourists to undertake environment-friendly actions and contribute to local economies while on a trek.
With Nepal Tourism Board as partner, the Green Hiker campaign will continue through Nepal Tourism Year 2011 and beyond. While Nepal Tourism Board will work through its network of tourism partners, WWF Nepal will work through its field offices, community-based organizations and local communities under the Sacred Himalayan Landscape program to help promote the campaign.Merchandising, interpersonal communications and events will be the major tools used in this campaign.
