22^nd April, 2023, Chitwan- Student representatives from WWF supported Eco-clubs from all over the country came together to celebrate the achievements of eco clubs during the Eco Club Summit marking the Earth Day. The main theme of the summit was to create waste free schools by 2030. Around 200 students representing 17 districts were present at the event where they played educational games, learned from one another’s experiences, and brainstormed ideas for their own clubs.

The event was also attended by Mr. Deepak Sharma, Joint Secretary from MoEST, Choodamani Paudel, Director of CEHRD, Baikuntha Prasad Aryal, Director General of CDC, and directors and representors from Education Development Directorate from all provinces.

“The world is for the younger generation to inherit. It is no surprise that we have contributed greatly to the degradation of the planet. We must equip them to be able to take care of it and right the wrongs of the generations before them.” said Mr. Deepak Sharma, Joint Secretary from MoEST.

Eco clubs create a foundation of a generation that is knowledgeable about the environment issues, in tune with nature and aware of the upcoming challenges. By supporting eco clubs across Nepal, WWF aims to prepare the next generation to inherit the planet and make it better for each generation.

“Whether to save the planet or destroy the planet, it is in the hands of the next generation” said Dr. Ghana Shyam Gurung, Country Representative of WWF Nepal. “Now we will be working with the central and provincial governments to review and strengthen the implementation of green school guidelines” added Dr. Gurung.
The eco club anthem, which was created to encourage solidarity across eco clubs from different locations, was also launched at the event along with training manual for teachers for human wildlife coexistence.

The event saw students, teachers, and central government representatives come together to celebrate eco clubs and commit to creating waste free schools by 2030.

“I have full faith that the upcoming generation can save our earth and undo the harms done by the generations before them” said Anil Keshary Shah, Youth Advisor of WWF Nepal.
